Innovative therapies for bone regeneration

The project iBone Therapies aims to accelerate the pre-commercial development of an injectable product (Dexgel Bone), which consists of the combination of the synthetic bone substitute Bonelike with dextrin hydrogel, through the performance of clinical trials in partnership with the Hospital University of Coimbra (CHUC). The confirmation of safety and efficacy of Dexgel Bone will allow obtaining the clinical compliance of the device, for further CE marking and placement of the product in the European market. Important therapeutic and economic outcomes are expected from this solution: improved biological performance; ease of use, due to good handling and injection properties, allowing mold the biomaterial perfectly to the bone defect; comfort and safety due to the application of minimally invasive surgical techniques and low cost. Therefore, this material is expected to become a competitive solution in terms of price and clinical performance.
In parallel, this project aims to develop more sophisticated solutions for bone regeneration, using the injectable matrix (dextrin hydrogel) combined with other bioactive agents (peptides and cells). These solutions have been studied in close collaboration with medical community and companies in the field, and are designed for the specific treatment of unmet clinical conditions, namely critical bone defects and osteomyelitis. The potential of the new solutions will be evaluated through pre-clinical trials coordinated by the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). Finally, this project will also propel the implementation of the cryopreservation service of dental pulp stem cells. Biosckin laboratory will be the first Portuguese laboratory providing this kind of service in the market aiming to reach a new market segment, targeting children and young adults.
